Hirose Inen was one of the top pupils of Matsuo Basho, a renowned haiku poet. He was born in Seki as the third son of a sake brewer, and was adopted by a merchant family in Nagoya.
Before he turned 40, he entered the priesthood and wandered around various places as a pupil of Basho. After Basho's death, he spread the Fura Nenbutsu to commemorate his teacher.
At the reconstructed Benkei-an, you can see the remnants of Inen, who loved poverty and was a pioneer of colloquial haiku.
